EMS3O1 – Media Studies

English Media is like every other English course you’ve taken, in that you will do the same things (you will be presented with a text, you will think about said text, and you will be asked to respond to said text) – the difference is that this course uses films, TV, video games, and other forms of ‘media’ as the texts rather than the poems, short stories, novels and plays used in traditional English class. Get it?

Specifically, you will have to navigate these 4 units to earn the EMS3O1 credit.

Student will get their feet wet in this introductory unit as they wade into the media pool.

Students will continue their exploration into media but will now move towards gaining an
Understanding of how and why media is created.

Unit 3 – Media and You                                                                                                       15%
Now students will get the chance to see how the world of Media impacts and interacts with their everyday.
            à The Media Machine and Social Media

            à Media Job Report

Unit 4 – Advertising                                                                                                              20%
The big bad wolf of Media – advertising is pervasive, so we might as well try to understand how it works.
            à Ad Basics
            à Analyze THAT
            à TV Ads
            à Promote THIS

Culminating Task                                                                                                    30%

Raise the HYPE!
            àStudents will try their hand at creating awareness for a
            product/cause/idea of their choice.
            àA proposal/pitch will be created to plan out the campaign
àMultiple media formats will be needed to create sufficient hype!
